SHANNON ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT — After 37 years with the City of Decatur and the past 32 years as city manager, Brett Shannon announced his retirement Monday night. Shannon made the announcement at the close of Monday’s city council meeting. He told his staff earlier in the day of his intent to leave the city in June. “It’s been a wild ride. It’s been fun to see what you walked into and what you’re leaving behind. It’s been fun to see what all has come to pass,” Shannon said. Shannon started with the city in 1985 after fielding a call from longtime city manager Sam Renshaw. Five years later when Renshaw, who had been with the city since 1958, retired, Shannon was tabbed as his replacement. “He left the city a heck of a lot better than he found it. I hope I did the same,” Shannon said. Under Shannon, Decatur became a home-rule city and has seen moderate growth. The city is currently starting a $34 million capital improvement plan with the sale of the bonds this week. The city’s sales tax receipts are currently on pace for nearly $6 million. “You put our city in a great position financially with your stewardship and good diligent use of funds,” said Decatur Mayor Mike McQuiston to Shannon. Council member Melinda Reeves added: “I appreciate your leadership for the past 37 years.”
