Speaking with our sister station KFOX14 exclusively earlier this month, Gonzalez told us he's grateful but also believes he deserves the new contract he was given by El Paso city leaders.

"It does feel good. I am very humble in the leadership and confidence of the team we created in our organization. Quite frankly the partnership of city council," Gonzalez said.

Leading up to that decision Gonzalez had been named a finalist for the city manager position in Frisco, Texas.

According to the evaluations, he met citywide goals like promoting the visual image of El Paso, he met the core values including integrity, respect, and accountability.

However, his 400,000 salary has been an issue for some people in El Paso.

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser tried vetoing his contract twice but was overruled by the city council.

"I’m confident that we’re doing the right thing and that’s the important thing. I did it because it’s the right thing for the community," Leeser said.

While his contract has received pushback from Leeser, Gonzalez told CBS4 he is worth his salary.

Gonzalez said he has achieved a lot during his 7 years in El Paso and said there is a lot more work to be done.
