With the aid of the Houston Police Department Bomb Squad, an explosive device was detonated aby a residence in the 3400 block of Fifth Street Thursday, June 2.

City of Bay City Fire Marshal Daniel Shook said in a press release that the explosive device was located during a code enforcement investigation for improperly stored chemicals at the residence.

On the morning of June 30, members of the Houston Police Department Bomb Squad met with Shook and Code Enforcement to search the residence. An explosive device was located inside the vacant residence. The team performed a controlled detonation to render the explosive device inactive.

According to Shook, at no time were any residents in danger from the device, and no one was injured during detonation. The Bay City Fire Department and Matagorda EMS were on scene for standby.

Shook said some of the chemicals were identified as being used for the manufacturing of pyrotechnics.

When Shook located the chemicals, he contacted the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF dispatched the Houston Police Department Bomb Squad to assist.

Shook is working with the Bay City Police Department while the incident is still under investigation.
