A man died after Irving police officers shot him at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Irving on Wednesday evening, police said.

Michael McPhail, 34, went to the emergency room “for a medical reason” around 7 p.m., according to a Thursday news release from police. He was waiting in the ER when a staff member went to check on him and said he had a handgun and was behaving unusually.

The staff member contacted a hospital police officer and an Irving officer, who was at the hospital for an unrelated incident, to assist.

A police spokesman said McPhail asked the staff member what he should do with the gun he brought, but that the way he was acting was what caused her to contact police.

McPhail fired the gun once while the officers were speaking with him and, after more officers arrived and tried to talk him into dropping the handgun, pointed the gun at officers and opened fire, according to the release. Officers shot and killed McPhail.

No other injuries were reported in the incident at the hospital, at 1901 N. MacArthur Blvd. Three officers fired shots and there was never an active shooter situation, according to Irving police.

In a statement, Baylor Scott & White said, “We appreciate the swift response of the Irving Police Department ... Patient care is continuing normally.”

Police said they had not had any previous interactions with McPhail but that he had a criminal history, though they could not say if he was ever convicted of anything, and was not living in the Irving area. A police spokesman would not disclose what that criminal history was.

There was no indication that McPhail was suicidal, police said, but investigators are looking further into what may have prompted him to go to the hospital with a gun and attempt to shoot officers.

Irving police said that “anyone who needs someone to talk to because of what you witnessed” can contact the family advocacy center at 972-721-6560.
