Irving has selected the new leader of its police department, hiring current Carrollton police chief Derick Miller to become its ninth chief in the department’s 75-year history, according to a news release.

The offer for his new position is expected to be confirmed on May 5 and he is slated to be sworn in as the new police chief on May 31.

Miller, a Benbrook native, began his law enforcement career in Carrollton as a reserve officer in 1992. He was appointed chief of police in Carrollton in 2017.

“Chief Miller’s experience, professional focus areas and approach to community outreach will be a great asset as the Irving Police Department continues to set the standard for best policing practices,” Irving City Manager Chris Hillman said in the news release.

Miller also works as an adjunct professor of criminology at UT Arlington, is the president of the DFW Major City Police Chiefs Association and is involved with other law enforcement-related organizations across the Metroplex.

Miller said in the news release that he is excited to lead the department.

“The Irving Police Department is a progressive agency that knows the pathway to continued success is made up of strong community partnerships and officers who proactively protect Irving with servants’ hearts,” Miller said in the release.

Miller has a masters in criminology and criminal justice from UT Arlington, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Senior Management Institute of Policing and the Institute of Law Enforcement Management, according to the release. He has a master peace officer’s certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
