The Waco City Council will look into approving $2 million for decorative lighting downtown.

The project would be an agreement between the state and Waco to install LED lights along four streets downtown.

This includes 4th and 5th Streets, 11th and 12th Streets, Martin Luther King Boulevard and University Parks at Interstate 35.

The city also has a funding agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation to install “globe lights” in some of these intersections.

As a ride share driver Catherine Newman drives around town often. She says the underpasses downtown always feel dark and empty.

“There’s a lot of traffic that comes through here, just at all hours of the day,” Newman said. “There’s a lot of kids that usually walk around here so we usually watch the kids to make sure they’re safe.”

“We wanted to enhance that area and didn’t want to leave it as a dark, unwelcoming place but something that is of interest,” traffic engineer Eric Gallt said. “It’s programmable and we can change the colors and usually do something different for Fourth of July, Baylor homecoming or things like that.

Newman says she gets a lot of comments from rider about the lights already installed near McLane Stadium and hopes to see more lights shine along the highway soon.

“I think having the colors for the games all that, the holidays, it would be really nice.”
