Colleyville residents are getting a recreation center after the City Council voted unanimously to purchase the Covenant Church property at 3508 Glade Road.

The vote followed an executive session Tuesday night.

Mayor Bobby Lindamood told the council that the church approached the city about buying the church buildings and surrounding property.

“This was an unexpected opportunity,” Lindamood said. The city will spend $8.5 million to purchase the property and $1.5 million for renovations.

Colleyville doesn’t have any gym space for basketball, volleyball and other indoor sports, and it has been using facilities in the Grapevine-Colleyville school district. However, the school district upgraded security and safety procedures, which made it more difficult to schedule activities, he said.

The former church property includes a large building, a smaller secondary building and athletic fields. The main building includes a gymnasium with two basketball courts, and it can also be used for volleyball and pickleball.

The building has 10 classrooms, a full-size kitchen, several “flex-use” rooms and a smaller gym.

A 2019 citizens survey showed that Colleyville residents didn’t want to spend a large amount of money on a rec center. Lindamood said that buying the church property will cost far less than building a center.

Recently, Colleyville also spent $4.65 million to renovate the senior citizens center.

Adrienne Lothery, an assistant city manager, said the city expects to close on the property by the end of the year. This story was originally published September 9, 2022 1:53 PM.
