Report: Elon Musk to build private airport outside Austin

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is developing plans for a new, private airport outside of Austin, according to reporting from Austonia. Sources told the publication that while the exact timetable for and location of the airport is unknown, the airfield is set to be constructed east of Austin near Bastrop.

Musk, who could potentially be the world’s first trillionaire, has been busy expanding his presence in the Austin-area. After opening Tesla’s four million square-foot Gigafactory Texas in April, the company filed a 500,000 square-foot expansion of the facility in June. Additionally, another of Musk’s companies, SpaceX, acquired a 46.5-acre tract of land in Bastrop County for a new facility.

The private airport could service Musk’s private jet and his executives, as well the tech billionaire’s companies, including the aforementioned Tesla and SpaceX, in addition to The Boring Company, which is also headquartered in Austin, according to Austonia.

To build a new airport, Musk would need federal EPA approval for environmental impacts and FAA approval for air traffic impacts, Austonia reported. If Musk does plan to build an airport, it “could be a long one” before it is constructed and operational, Austonia said.
