Round Rock officials approved a $574,000 engineering contract with Kimley-Horn for engineering services of the city's transportation master plan update during a July 28 meeting.

The Round Rock Transportation Master Plan, last updated in 2017, provides a roadmap as the city plans for growth, determining what the needs of current residents are and what future residents might need in terms of vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Once completed, the revised master plan will include an updated capital improvement plan, which will serve as the basis for the city's roadway impact fee program that is required to be updated every five years. Corridor studies of McNeil Road and Sam Bass Road will also be conducted as part of the update, both of which are right-of-way-constrained roadways, meaning that there is little room to expand the existing roadway. According to city documents, more detailed development concepts are necessary to make transportation improvements for these roadways, and those applications can be used on other streets with similar constraints.

Round Rock Transportation Director Gary Hudder stated that transportation master plans are typically updated every five to 10 years.

The contract will be paid through the city's Transportation and Economic Development Corp. (Type B).
