Earlier this year, the Jourdanton City Council motioned to send out requests for applications for the position of city manager following the accepted resignation of current city manager Lamar Schulz, who has served in the position since 2018. The council set an effective date of Dec. 31 for Schulz’s resignation. After receiving multiple applications, Public Safety Solutions, LLC shortlisted the position to just three applicants.
Council members had a luncheon with the three candidates for the position Friday afternoon at the Jourdanton Community Center. The three candidates were Bobby Martinez, Jill Shelton and Melissa Gonzales. Council members, as well as other city officials, were separated into three different groups. During the luncheon, the candidates spent 15 minutes with each group of council members and city officials answering questions. After the luncheon, the candidates were taken on a bus tour of the city and met again with the council in the evening.
The council met up Saturday morning where they went into executive session to interview each candidate. Following the executive session, council members voted to appoint Martinez to the position. Following an approval from legal counsel, the city plans to announce him officially as the new city manager in their council meeting on Monday, Nov. 7 in Jourdanton City Hall. Martinez is currently an instructor at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and has served as a city manager for the City of Crowley in the past. His contract is to be approved during the council meeting, which begins at 6 p.m.
