FORT WORTH - The city broke ground in September on the “porch” design for the city council chamber, which will sit next to the Pier One tower just west of the intersection of Forest Park Boulevard and West Belknap Street.
The new council chamber will be a welcoming place for all members of the community, according to a blog post on the city of Fort Worth’s website. A plaza can be used for festivals, city events or even protests. A trail network will tie into the nearby Trinity River Trails.
The city purchased the tower in February 2021 and plans to move 22 city departments from 14 city owned buildings to the new site. The consolidation is meant to make it easier for residents to access city services, while also enabling the city to fund the project by selling off city property.
The city estimates it could generate $19.4 million from the building sales, which will offset some of the $180 million cost of renovating the tower and building the new council chamber.
The council chamber is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2023. The city originally planned to have it open in time for the newly elected council in June, but construction delays from the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back the timeline. Renovation and move in for the remainder of the Pier One tower is expected in early 2024.
