An old railroad trestle bridge crossing Oso Bay is nearing what could be confirmation of new life.

A study will determine whether the section of the former Tex-Mex railway spur could become a hike-and-bike trail that would link Flour Bluff to the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve on the city’s Southside.

It will be partially funded by a $175,000 Texas General Land Office grant, formally accepted by the Corpus Christi City Council on Tuesday.

The money will go toward evaluating the feasibility and structural engineering assessment, needed to determine an estimate on the overall project costs, city officials said.

The city made an in-kind contribution of about $117,000 to support stakeholder engagement and three staff members, according to an agenda memo.

It’s considered the first phase of the project.

The idea is to repurpose the half-mile trestle bridge — built in 1940 — making it accessible for a wide range of recreational opportunities, including fishing, jogging and biking.
