SWEETWATER, Texas — The future is now for Sweetwater, as it gave the green light to a 20 year plan for the city.

The sweeping plan includes several elements for improvement, among the biggest is driving business and economic growth to downtown, expanding parks and recreation, and fixing those roads and streets.

Sweetwater City Manager David Vela say that making Downtown Sweetwater a destination is central to the plan, “The city’s role in all of this is to create the environment for investment in Sweetwater and particularly our downtown. The folks told us that they wanted restaurants and places to go after hours and on the weekends The folks want a robust, improved downtown area and so our role is to try and create the environment where that could happen for everybody.”

One of the other key improvements is beefing up parks and recreation, but Vela told us that steps are already being taken to make that a reality, “We’re currently working on installing a new fitness court at Newman park, which is our signature park, here in Sweetwater and so that is in the process of being installed. So improving our playground equipment, hike and bike trails, those types of things, getting people out and getting them fit and giving them opportunities to get out and create memories with their families. That’s the kind of what we’re looking at as far as parks and recreation goes from Sweetwater.”

Another one of the big changes that the city is hoping to make includes something that affects everyone, and their cars; the improvement to the roads and streets throughout the city.

Vela went on to tell us that the plan will be reviewed every three years to check progress and make changes when needed, but he also say that he can't wait to see what's in store for the city of Sweetwater.

“We’re ready to grow. We’re ready to create that robust environment for the long term so that folks can settle here, their families can settle here in Sweetwater and businesses and visitors will feel welcome here in town.”
