Looking ahead: The city of El Paso to complete several big projects in 2023

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — As the Sun City continues to grow, so does the need for new amenities and upgrades.

As we approach 2023, the City of El Paso has various projects on its radar, either to be completed or to complete.

Sam Rodriguez, the city of El Paso’s Chief Operation Officer said the Children’s Museum downtown is one of the city projects that is expected to be completed in the new year.

El Paso Animal Services is also getting major upgrades.

“We're scheduled to start construction on the expansion of additional dog kennels out of that site. In the beginning of 2023, we're looking to add over 400 additional kennels as part of that next phase of improvements on that particular project. It’s something that's a high priority that we intend to hear from the community as well,” Rodriguez said.

In addition to this, in 2023 the El Paso Zoo will officially complete and open up their penguin exhibit for the community.

In terms of the roadways, Viscount Boulevard will undergo street and lighting improvements. There will also be street projects wrapping up on Yarborough, George Dieter, Lee Trevino, and the Schuster Corridor.

Beginning design in 2023, the remodel of the Mission Valley and the Pebble Hills Regional Command Center.

Multiple fire stations across the city will also be remodeled through the next year.

We're wrapping up construction on Fire Station 36, which is over on the west side part of the city off of Resler,” Rodriguez said. “We're also scheduled to begin construction on Fire Station 38. The Eastside Regional Command Center also for the public safety bond. And this was one of the big elements of that bond that was approved, that's under construction. It's going to continue through 2023, it's a pretty big project, a $40 million project. That will be wrapping up towards the end of 23 and 24.

Rodriguez said the city is not done yet, that they will also go into 2023 with an open mind seeking public engagement from the community on the upgrades people feel El Paso needs.
