Schertz police responded early Tuesday to Rose Garden Elementary School after being notified an 8-year-old was in possession of a firearm, according to Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District.

The incident occurred about 11:40 a.m. when a student told a teacher he was shown a handgun by a classmate.

The teacher located the student and took away the weapon, which was wrapped in an article of clothing. The student was then taken to the office where police were contacted, according to a news release.

School district officials have not said what actions are being taken with the student and that the incident remains under investigation. Schertz police say they are working with the Bexar County District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed.

Officials did not say if they know why the student had the weapon, only that police are trying to determine if there was a threat intended toward students or staff.
