BEAUMONT — Beaumont City Council has voted 5-2 to move ahead with developing a proposal that could lead to the Battleship Texas making the Neches River in Beaumont its permanent home.

Councilman Audwin Samuel and Councilman Chris Durio voted against the motion.

It's not a decision to bring the ship to Beaumont, but to authorize the City Manager to pursue activities necessary toward developing a formal proposal for berthing the Battleship Texas on the Neches River in Beaumont. The vote doesn't commit the city to spend any money at this point, according to the City Attorney, but only to explore the option of bringing the ship to Beaumont. The process could take many years before a decision is finalized on where the ship makes its permanent home.

Council also reviewed and discussed the Lanier & Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc. final report on the conceptual engineering associated with the proposed relocation of the Battleship Texas to the Neches River in Beaumont

The debate lasted for much of the afternoon, with discussion focused on the potential cost.

The iconic ship is undergoing repairs and refurbishing at a Galveston shipyard.

Baytown is trying to lure the ship there after the work is done.
