Congressman Henry Cuellar presented a federal earmark check in the amount of $2,975,000 for the construction of a new Pleasanton Police Department and Municipal Court. Cuellar was joined by many city leaders as well as law enforcement officials in front of the department Friday morning.

“I thank our Pleasanton police and the rest of our law enforcement in Atascosa County for everything they do to keep our streets safe,” Cuellar said. “I also want to thank Mayor Clinton Powell for his leadership to meet the needs of his city.”

The new 20,000 squarefoot police department and municipal court will house 30 certified peace officers, eight civilian personnel, one full-time municipal court judge and two court clerks.

“This will free up office space at city hall for new positions as the city grows,” Powell said. “The city is continuing to work on projects for the river park, housing and up- grades to facilities.”

The City of Pleasanton will match with an amount of $5,525,000 to support the $8.5 million project.

“Thank you for supporting the Pleasanton Police Department, its uniformed officers and civilian personnel,” Pleasanton PD Chief Ronald Sanchez said. “As you know this department has outgrown this building behind me. The current population and the projected growth of our city certainly justifies the need for a larger and more modern police headquarters and municipal court.”

The same day, Cuellar announced $45 million in transportation funding for Atascosa County. The funds, which are authorized through the Texas Department of Transportation’s

2023 Unified Transportation Program (UTP), are part of the state’s 10-year plan to guide the development of transportation work across the state.

“We are excited to learn about the possibility of grant monies to improve our city and county roads and look forward to hearing more details,” said Atascosa County Judge Bob Hurley.
