City appoints fire chief interim manager

Nacogdoches City Council on Wednesday emerged from a closed session and appointed Fire Chief Keith Kiplinger as the city’s interim city manager.

City Manager Mario Canizares is departing Feb. 10 to begin a new position as the town manager of Prosper, a fast-growing North Texas city. He has been city manager of Nacogdoches since August 2020. 

The council on Wednesday night also unanimously voted to delay hiring a search firm or selected a permanent replacement for Canizares until a new council is seated in May, as the mayor and two council seats are up for reelection.

Kiplinger, the city’s longtime fire chief who coordinated local vaccination efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, will receive a $3,833 monthly stipend for temporarily taking over the city manager role.
