EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Tommy Gonzalez's employment with the city of El Paso will be discussed at the next city council meeting.
Gonzalez has been the city manager for the city of El Paso since 2014.
The item was added to the agenda for Tuesday's meeting.
It stated, "Discussion and action on the Employment Agreement between the City of El Paso and the City Manager."
Representatives, Brian Kennedy and Joe Molinar co-sponsored the item on the agenda.
People in El Paso have said they have had issues with Gonzalez earning $400,000 a year.
“It’s a little extreme considering all the issues we’ve had as of recently," said Nathan Tillman.
"That’s quite a bit of money for El Paso, I grant you a lot of people are upset about it," said Barbara Kaluser.
In the event the city ends his contract, Gonzalez is entitled to a payout of $1 million.
"Sometimes it’s better to cut your losses and move on, if we pay $1,000,000 and we can get someone for half that price it would pay for itself in 3 years," said Tillman.
KFOX14/CBS4 reached out to Brian Kennedy and Joe Molinar. Kennedy did not want to talk about the matter and Molinar has yet to respond to our request.
"I really do think that El Pasoans need to rethink how the city is run, I have no question about that and his job and salary is a part of that question," said Klauser.
In 2022, the city council voted to cap Gonzalez's salary and approved Gonzalez's contract extension for five years until 2029.
Gonzalez's salary cap is $450,000 with any increases above that amount going towards the City of El Paso's streets department for street improvements.
Tuesday's meeting will be held at City Hall located at 300 N. Campbell and virtually at 9 a.m.
