On the coldest day of the year so far, electricity is out at nearly 6,000 CenterPoint Energy meters in Galveston County, more than 5,000 of them on Galveston Island.

Almost 4,000 meters are without power between 61st Street and 7 Mile Road in Galveston, according to CenterPoint Energy’s outage tracker.

Another 1,000 have lost power near Jamaica Beach and another 500 west of Jamaica Beach to the county line.

San Leon had more than 250 outages, Algoa 257 outages, Hitchcock 40, Santa Fe 30 and 23 meters are dead near Tiki Island.

"CenterPoint Energy’s Houston electric system is currently experiencing isolated outages across our service territory as a result of strong winds associated with the arctic front impacting our area," the company said in a statement.

"We are fully staffed with skilled crews working to assess damage and restore service across our service territory."

Texas-New Mexico Power Co. was reporting fewer than 50 outages in the Galveston County part of its service area at 11 a.m.

This is a developing story. Back later for more.
