New Braunfels City University now accepting applications

City University is designed to give participants a greater understanding of essential services, programs and initiatives provided by the city. Those involved will also have the opportunity to hear from each department what their goals and primary functions are.
Beginning in 2011, City University has had approximately 315 graduates, many of which go on to serve on various city boards and commissions, including City Council and the Bond Advisory Committee, according to the city.
“City University is a chance for residents to have a hands-on, interactive experience hearing from city officials and employees, and exploring facilities,” Director of Communications and Community Engagement Jenna Vinson said in a statement. “This provides participants with a unique understanding of how their city government works, helps educate residents, and continues the city’s commitment to transparency.”
The 2023 City University program is an eight-week class with sessions held weekly on Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. beginning March 23. A graduation ceremony will be held prior to the New Braunfels City Council meeting May 8 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
According to the city, each meeting will give participants a close look at how city services are provided with presentations, demonstrations and tours, including city administration as well as the police, fire, public works, parks and library departments.
Applications are now available at www.newbraunfels.gov/CityU and can be submitted online through 5 p.m. Feb. 10. Space in the program is limited, and applicants must be residents of the city of New Braunfels or its extraterritorial jurisdiction and be at least 17 years old, according to the city.
