Following four months of work, Mud Bridge — a heavily trafficked corridor between the Southside and Flour Bluff — will reopen Friday morning.

City Manager Peter Zanoni made the announcement Tuesday.

The bridge was first closed in December, after city crews investigating a sinkhole found substantial damage to the structure’s embankments, believed to be caused by a washout and the deterioration of articulated block mats.

Further compromise was revealed on subsequent review. Nearly half of the crossing’s 55 pylons showed corrosion, according to city management.

Speaking on a broader scope, officials have blamed the problems on the age of the bridge — roughly 40 years — longtime general maintenance neglect and a historical lack of a department to manage those responsibilities.

The city-owned bridge, located on Yorktown Boulevard, on average sees 10,000 motorists per day.

An exact cost for the restoration was not immediately available Tuesday afternoon.

In the past, city officials have said the expenses were expected to come in below $3 million. Funding would be drawn from storm water revenue.

The Texas Department of Transportation already had on its books plans to replace the structure. The state agency agreed to accelerate the timeline on launching preliminary work for its reconstruction — from 2026 to 2025 — following reports on the bridge’s condition.

That effort is expected to cost about $20.3 million.
