City suspends streetcars and close Father Rahm for 'public safety'

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The City of El Paso will suspend the El Paso Streetcars and close Father Rahm Avenue until further notice according to a press release issued by the city Saturday.

This includes service in the lower and upper loops.

Father Rahm Avenue between South Oregon Street and South Mesa Street will be closed to traffic starting Saturday.

The closures were deemed necessary over concerns for "public safety" and to accommodate the growing number of migrants seen over the last several weeks in the downtown area.

Father Rahm falls on the streetcar's route and is next to Sacred Heart Church.

The closure will also allow City staff the opportunity to clean and maintain streets said city leaders.

As a reminder, the City of El Paso cannot enforce federal immigration laws but is working closely with state and federal partners to provide additional support to the community and local NGO, added officials.

The city would like to remind drivers of a few safety tips as people arriving in the city grows:
