At the February Muleshoe City Council meeting, the city approved two different grants expected to lead to downtown revitalization.

Previous to the meeting, the City announced public hearings on the grant proposals. No one from the public attended.

Planning Grant #7220084, Planning and Development Grant, is a Community Development Block Grant offering a comprehensive study on the city of Muleshoe. Council voted to approve the findings of the comprehensive study presented at the Jan. 9 meeting.

At that time, Council heard a presentation of the City Plan for CDBG Planning Grant #7220084. This was a non-actionable item presenting a series of maps and financial analyses concerning such matters as population, drainages, housing, roads and water to help the city plan for the future.

“The Council took action to accept the findings of the comprehensive grant that allows the city to have a plan moving forward,” City Manager Ramon Sanchez said. “The findings addressed matters of infrastructure that we will look at in the near future.

“It looks at existing homes and kind of rates them on their years of construction, how it looks, and how it’s maintained. It gives us a good picture of what needs to be done moving forward and helps us to prioritize our needs.”

Council also voted to apply for the 2023 TxCDBG Downtown Revitalization Program Grant. “We just applied for this,” Sanchez said. “The purpose of the grant is to revitalize downtown. We’re in the process of procuring grant consultants and engineers for that project. Part of the grant focuses on sidewalks, lighting and utilities. It’s real preliminary, but those are some of the things we’ll look at.
