A Houston-based real estate firm has set its sights on a massive redevelopment of Sugar Land's iconic Imperial Char House. PUMA Development—which specializes in creating experience-driven, mixed-use communities—recently introduced plans
to not only preserve the 98-year-old structure but to also redevelop the surrounding 20-acre Imperial Historic District into a $1 billion mixed-use development featuring residential areas, commercial office spaces, restaurants, retail, and more.
The former sugar cane refinery, which once played a pivotal role in the city's economy, is no longer operational and has been vacant for 20 years. Plans for the new development, which are still in early stages, include the construction of 660 apartments and homes, 150,000 square feet of retail, and 300,000 square feet of office space, according to a report by Marissa Luck of the Houston Chronicle. A former warehouse on the site was previously redeveloped along with two houses and museums. However, a remainder of 140,000 square feet has yet to be developed.
