EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) — Some El Paso City Council staff are looking to highlight local LGBTQIA + voices and promote a safe community for all residents.
City leaders are scheduled to meet Tuesday morning and on the agenda is an item to request that both the City Manager and City Attorney develop a plan to promote a safer space for all residents throughout El Paso.
There are four-key recommendations that are part of the plan to encourage safety for the LGBTQIA + community to include:
- creating an office of equality with an equality and inclusion board
- working with the borderland rainbow center to create a ‘one el paso safer together campaign’
- deprioritize the enforcement of seeking gender affirming care
- deprioritize the enforcement of drag bans in city limits
Gender affirming care is medical or social care that aligns with the gender a person identifies with.
Also on the agenda, is an item to recognize the Borderland Rainbow Center which is the only LGBTQIA + community center within a 300-mile radius.
The center serves residents of El Paso county, Deming county, Otero county and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
Both agenda items come as the city has previously recognized the efforts of other LGBTQIA+ initiatives we well pride month.
The city also previously voted to protect pregnant people and deprioritize police investigations on abortion.
El Paso City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at 9 a.m.
