Lubbock Police officer hospitalized after crash on I-27

LUBBOCK, Texas — An officer with the Lubbock Police Department was moderately injured after an LPD vehicle was struck near Interstate 27 and 50th Street on Monday, police said.
According to LPD, the officer was removing a mattress from the road at 1:40 p.m. when the vehicle was hit. Police said the officer was taken to Covenant Medical Center. LPD’s Major Crash Unit was investigating, according to police.
LPD later named the driver of the pickup truck that hit the officer as Jerrod Ellison, 36. Police said Ellison was trying to pass another vehicle when he hit the officer. Ellison had minor injuries and did not want to be taken to the hospital, according to LPD. Police said the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
See the full press release below.(LUBBOCK, TX) – The Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is investigating a Monday afternoon officer-involved collision.
At 1:40 p.m., an LPD officer was stopped in the northbound lanes of the 5400 block of I-27, with his emergency lights activated, due to a mattress in the roadway. Through the initial course of the investigation, it appears a pick-up, driven by 36-year-old Jerrod Ellison, was traveling north, when it attempted to pass a truck, also traveling north, when the pick-up collided with the officer’s vehicle.
The officer was transported to Covenant Medical Center with moderate injuries, where he was later released. Ellison suffered minor injuries and declined to be transported to the hospital.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
