At least 12 people were sickened after exposure to too much chlorine at a gym on Houston’s west side, Texas officials said.

Firefighters responded to a reported “chlorine spill with possible accidental ingestion” in a “lazy river pool area,” shortly before 5 p.m. on June 24, the Houston Fire Department said in a tweet. The incident happened at Club Westside, a fitness center, KRIV reported.

The department initially said that seven children and three adults were taken to hospitals, but a later tweet by Chief Samuel Peña brought the total number to 12. “Incident is under control. Cause appears to be an over-chlorination of the pool(s),” Peña said, adding that, “exposure to over-chlorination can provoke asthma, nausea, skin & eye irritation.”

Officials did not comment on the conditions of the people who were exposed. Club Westside declined to comment when contacted by McClatchy News on June 25.
