Interlocal agreement merging city courts finalized

The Boyd City Council approved the interlocal agreement for the City of New Fairview to take over its court services Thursday.
The interlocal agreement, which has been in progress for several weeks, is now finalized as New Fairview approved the item at its council meeting Monday.
“This is the last action for now that council will take on this,” Boyd City Administrator William Taylor said. “This agreement finalizes that and basically merges the courts together.”
Ongoing discussions have included Boyd providing police services for New Fairview to fill a gap in services that they need. With court services being the first priority, the cities will now turn to forming an agreement for police services.
“Now that we’ve got this done, we can all start discussions on police services,” Taylor said. “We’ll get something drawn up and bring it to council for consideration. We’re hoping to move forward with that in the next few months.”
Additionally, city secretary Daniel Bourgeois was appointed to be the city records custodian and replaced the vacant position. At the prior Boyd City Council meeting on July 6, the council established the municipal court in Boyd as a court of record and authorized the appointment of the municipal court judge and prosecutor from New Fairview.
“It’s a pleasure to see our cities working together in Wise County,” Boyd Mayor Rodney Holmes said. “We’re a lot stronger together, for sure.”
