Major flooding in North Texas near Amarillo resulted in thousands of cattle dying at the Circle Three Feed Yard in Castro County, according to the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. The group confirmed to News Channel 10 on Thursday, June 8, that the loss amounts to 4,000 cattle.
Both the association and Circle Three worked alongside the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to dispose of the carcasses and debris in compliance with TCEQ guidelines, according to the TV station. The association will work with Circle Three to care for the remaining cattle.
Castro County is 73 miles Southwest of Amarillo, an area where flooding has caused evacuations to farms and communities. The area has received several rounds of heavy rainfall and storms since May 27, according to a news release from Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday, June 6.
Abbott issued a disaster declaration for the Texas Panhandle, High Plains, and South Plains regions. The counties in the governor's declaration include Bailey, Briscoe, Deaf Smith, Garza, Hale, Lamb, Lynn, Potter, Randall, Parmer, Roberts, and Castro (where the feed yard is located) counties.
