The San Antonio Police Department released the name of the officer shot by a wanted suspect on Sept. 5.
Officer Jose Bernal Rodriguez is recovering from injuries he suffered when attempting to arrest a man wanted on felony warrants. Rodriguez, who has four years of service in the department, is one of six officers injured in several officer-involved shootings during a two-week span.
The string of shootouts has led to tension between Police Chief William McManus, who said each of the gunmen involved had a violent criminal history, and Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales.
Rodriguez was following Dominick Xavier Rubio, 29, outside a residence in the 200 block of Iroquois Street when Rubio “ambushed” the officer with a sawed-off shotgun, Police Chief William McManus said.
He was shot in the torso and the arm and taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Rubio fled the scene, police said, but surrendered hours later without further incident. He was charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer on top his charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and violation of bond.
His bail totals over $1 million.
