During a work session at a Coppell City Council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 12, staff provided the council with a final opportunity to give input or feedback regarding the proposed FY24 Work Plan.
The proposed FY 2024 Council Goals and Staff Work Plan was developed in response to the work and direction done by the Coppell City Council during the Jan. 2023 city council retreat with some additional input around the Vision 2040 Plan. The results of the city council’s work was incorporated into the development of the proposed 2023-24 budget and provides the direction for staff activities in accomplishing the city council’s stated goals for the coming fiscal year.
The document is formatted to reflect the Vision 2040 pillars and goals. The first column identifies the 2040 pillar, the second column identifies the 2040 goals, and the third column identifies the work plan objectives in support of the city council’s adopted pillars and goals.
There are seven pillars outlined within the FY24 Work Plan, with the foundation focused on sustainable government. Key focuses for Coppell City Council in terms of a sustainable government include making sure the city has enough financial resources to support city services, maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction, ensuring city infrastructure is well-maintained, and maintaining a quality workforce to serve the community.
The seven pillars in the FY24 Work Plan are as follows:
- Pillar One: Perpetuate a Learning Environment
- Pillar Two: Foster an Inclusive Community Fabric
- Pillar Three: Enhance the Unique “Community Oasis” Experience
- Pillar Four: Future-Oriented Approach to Residential Housing
- Pillar Five: Create Business and Innovation Nodes
- Pillar Six: Implement Innovative Transportation Networks
- Pillar Seven: Apply Smart City Approach to Resource Management
One of the bigger changes outlined under one of the pillars was the official move of Coppell’s annual Kaleidoscope event to Old Town. The square will be transformed into a colorful celebration for all ages to enjoy, highlighting the diversity and unique aspects of the Coppell community through a display of art, culture, music, and more. This year’s event will be on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 3 to 7 p.m.
“We’ve been tracking attendance for Kaleidoscope and we are streamlining and focusing the theming for the event itself, and we are confident Old Town will be a perfect venue for that event,” said Traci Leach, deputy city manager for the city of Coppell.
The Old Town lawn will house a variety of entertainment, including storytelling, speed painting, airbrush tattoos and stilt walkers. Performances showcasing different cultures will be held in The Grove outside the Coppell Arts Center and will include appearances by Milaana Dance, Lara Latin, Grace Hula Dance Company, and the B3 Entertainment Lion Dancers.
Throughout and around the Old Town pavilion, an array of vendors and organizations local to Coppell and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex will be on site. Several food trucks will also be in attendance for event goers to purchase bites, drinks and treats.
The FY24 Work Plan will be included in the Sept. 26 meeting for Coppell City Council consideration and approval. Work on these items will begin after Oct. 1, 2023, with the start of the new fiscal year.
