POINT COMFORT – The Point Comfort City Council terminated the employment of its city administrator during a special called meeting Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Councilwoman Laura Kurtz made the motion to terminate Tammy Soliz as city administrator following a closed session that Soliz did not attend. It was seconded by Councilman Clint Machicek and it was unanimously approved. Councilman Cary Kneupper was not present at the meeting.

“She was not doing her job,” said Mayor Steve Lambden on why Soliz was let go.

Kurtz said, “Too many things were not getting done over a long period of time.”

Also during the meeting, Amy Blanchett, senior communications representative for Formosa Plastics, commended residents for their participation in the recycling effort during the Citizens Comment section.

She said Republic Industries was impressed with how clean the recyclables were and how low was the contamination rate.

“A low contamination rate is unusual when a program is started and Republic Industries was impressed,” she said. “People are reading the material, recycling the right things and cleaning them.”

Recycling pickup is every other Friday and the next one will be Sept. 22.

Also, Point Comfort Police Chief Troy Baxter said there is a scam going on via email concerning a speeding infringement caught on red light cameras.

There are no such cameras in Point Comfort, said Baxter.

“And, the police department does not do anything via email,” he said.

The council concluded its meeting with a budget workshop. General Fund revenue is estimated at $1,438,325 in revenue with budgeted expenses of $1,425,799.92, which leaves a net of more than $12,525.08.

The council will meet Monday, Sept. 25, to adopt the budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year.
