279 workers in Bexar County get layoff notices; about half to remain under new contract at Christus

Aramark Services recently issued layoff notices to about 700 workers at Christus Health facilities statewide, including about 140 in Bexar County. Christus says the jobs will transition to Morrison, its new contractor, as of Nov. 1.

Nearly 300 workers in Bexar County recently received layoff notices, with half of those going to food service workers at two Christus Health hospitals in San Antonio who are expected to retain their jobs under a new contractor.

The 140 workers at Christus Children’s Hospital in San Antonio and Santa Rosa Hospital in Westover Hills are among nearly 700 statewide who were notified by Aramark Services Inc. that their jobs are ending because the company is being replaced as the food service provider at seven Christus facilities across the state.

Compass United, a child care case manager at BCFS Health and Human Services, is laying off 104 call center workers, and Watts Regulators Co., a shuttering plumbing supplier, is laying off 31.

Christus said its food service workforce will be offered new jobs under a vendor contract with Morrison come Nov. 1. The positions range from dietitians to cooks.

“We do not expect any disruption to current operations or employment,” Christus said in a statement. “We want to clarify that Aramark is legally required by the federal government to provide notification of 60 calendar days in advance of planned closings and layoffs. While technically these employees will be laid off from Aramark, we expect them to transition immediately to employment with Morrison.”

Aramark filed its layoff notices with the Texas Workforce Commission on Sept. 18 for layoffs it said will be effective Oct. 31.

San Antonio-based Compass United said in its Sept. 18 letter to the commission that it’s cutting 104 jobs because it’s ending a program. The layoffs will be effective Oct. 31.

In a Sept. 8 letter, Watts said “changing business needs” require the company to close its San Antonio location. It said the 31 employees there would be laid off effective Nov. 6. Watts Regulators is a division of Massachusetts-based Watts Water Technologies Inc.
