The Town of Woodsboro is looking for a new police chief.

Ryan Gregory, who held the position for two years, resigned in August to accept a position with Victoria ISD’s Career & Technology Institute teaching criminal justice to high school students.

“Both my parents were school teachers, and it’s something I have definitely been interested in,” said Gregory, who began his new job on Sept. 6. “I was aware of their program and was always interested in it. So when an opportunity came up, I was glad to put in for it.”

Gregory’s last day as chief was Aug. 31. He said he will remain with the Woodsboro Police Department as a part-time officer.

WPD Officer Russell Smith was confirmed by the Town of Woodsboro council and sworn in as interim chief on Sept. 5.

“I have assumed duties as interim chief of police for six months to allow the city council to decide the next step,” Smith said.

Gregory said his tenure as WPD chief was an enjoyable one.

“I learned a lot,” Gregory said. “I love the community. I made a lot of great friends. The department is in great hands with Russell.”
