Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration on Friday, August 11, that includes 191 of the state's 254 counties over active wildfires that have reportedly burned more than 5,000 acres. There are currently 181 counties that
have issued burn bans, according to the Texas A&M Fire Service.
San Antonio and surrounding counties have reported grassfires, including one that destroyed a Northside home and an Austin apartment complex, due to critical fire conditions. Local fire officials have also cited those same critical fire conditions as exacerbating fires that happen due to other circumstances and making it harder to fight them, including an August 7 blaze that destroyed an apartment on the Northwest side.
There are five active fires that officials are attempting to contain that have burned a combined 8,275.6 acres, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service Incident Viewer on Saturday, August 12.
- The Cambell fire in Archer County that has burned 4,000 acres and is 25% contained.
- The Monkey Creek fire in Hardeman County that has burned 2,200 acres and is 35% contained.
- The Boggy Creek fire in Caldwell County that has burned 228.6 acres and is 75% contained.
- The Hill fire in Eastland County that has burned 397 acres and is 75% contained.
- The Santa Rosa Creek fire in Wilbarger County that has burned 1450 acres and is 80% contained.
