AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The Amarillo City Council will meet Wednesday to discuss firing city manager Jared Miller and appointing an interim.

The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. at City Hall.

Miller, who was hired in 2017, got a $19,000 raise in April. His current salary is $313,000.

The previous city council also approved a new contract for Miller in April.

According to the contract, it would take a 4-1 vote to fire Miller without cause. If Miller is fired without cause, the city would have to pay him 18-months severance -- which is $469,500 based on his current salary -- and pay for his health insurance during that time.

Current Mayor Cole Stanley voted against the raise and new contract. He questioned why the city couldn't wait for the new council to elected on May 6.

Residents also asked the same question during public comment.

Before the vote on April 3, then City Councilman Dr. Eddie Sauer said the "city can’t afford (another long search)."

It took the city 15-months to find Miller. Then City Councilman Howard Smith said at the time that voting on April 3, instead of waiting for the new council, was about stability.
