League City may temporarily suspend activities with the League City Regional Chamber of Commerce as questions lurk about how the chamber has managed American Rescue Plan Act funds.

What happened

Mayor Nick Long motioned to suspend the city’s participation with the chamber until a third-party audit is completed to determine that the city’s ARPA funds are being spent correctly.

Quotes of note

“There have been questions about how the federal ARPA money was spent by the chamber, and that money came to us,” Long said. “It’s our responsibility to make sure that federal money and tax money is spent appropriately.”

Long added he didn’t think the city should spend any more money with the chamber until the chamber could show the money it’d already been given had been spent well.

“I still support the chamber,” Long said. “I’m on the chamber board. I still support it in a personal context, but I think we need to safeguard that money.”

Council Member Tom Crews said he felt there was not enough context to vote on the motion and made an amendment to Long's motion to move the consideration of the city's participation with a chamber to a separate item to be considered at a later date.
