A man is dead following an altercation with a Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy while being booked into the Bexar County Jail on Sunday, August 27, according to a BCSO news release.
Emmanuel Mora, 37, was arrested by Balcones Heights officers and was taken to jail where he was patted down and had a narcotics warrant checked. He reportedly became agitated and refused to continue the search, resulting in deputies trying to put handcuffs on him. Mora refused the use of handcuffs and kicked deputies as they tried to restrain him, BCSO officials said.
After calling for backup, which included requesting medical staff, Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) deputies used a Taser on him. Following the use of the Taser, Mora seemed to calm down and was seated to be seen for a medical examination. Allegedly, Mora then became agitated once more, which caused deputies to place him on the ground to handcuff him, according to the news release.
Not long after this happened, Mora was unresponsive. In response to the medical emergency, members of the medical staff administered Narcan and performed CPR. They also gave him two more doses of Narcan, which is used to help those suffering from an overdose. However, Mora was declared dead, the BCSO said.
Preliminary investigations into the incident revealed that Mora may have had a medical episode caused by preexisting substance use. Mora's body will be taken to the medical examiner's office to determine an exact cause of death. Meanwhile, the criminal investigation division, internal affairs, and the public integrity unit with BCSO are investigating the causes of Mora's death. In addition, the Karnes County Sheriff's Office will also be looking into the incident, according to the news release.
