Port Isabel Mayor Martin Cantu Jr. has begun an initiative with local artists, such as Christina Salazar, to restore and beautify the city’s iconic dolphin sculptures and infuse additional artistic vibrancy into the city.
Mayor Cantu prioritizes restoration, aiming to repair damaged elements before engaging more artists for additional creations.
Salazar, noted for her work on a turtle for the South Padre Island Turtle Trail and Port Isabel’s dolphins, is diligently restoring weathered sculptures. She envisions involving art students from local schools in future projects, imparting practical knowledge about design submission, artistic mediums, and commission pricing.
She noted that restoring the dolphins is hard work and requires a great deal of sanding before any paint is newly applied.
