A recent rise in severe dog attacks has the city searching for solutions.

San Antonio Animal Care Services announced on Friday a new “dangerous dog registry” that will detail where canines deemed “dangerous dogs” are located. In order to be formally designated as dangerous, an animal must make an unprovoked attack outside the owner’s property that causes bodily injury.

A dog also could qualify as “dangerous” if it acts in such a way that a person reasonably believes the animal would cause bodily injury if it left its yard.

“The City of San Antonio’s Dangerous Dog Registry allows us to keep our community informed and safe,” Animal Care Services director Shannon Sims said in a statement. “Over the past year, ACS has worked diligently to increase the number of Animal Care Officers to improve the response time to critical calls. The Dangerous Dog Registry is part of ACS’ Strategic Plan that supports a safe community for residents in their neighborhoods.”

There are currently more than 100 dogs deemed “dangerous” in San Antonio, according to ACS officials, and the registry reflects that number. The registry is searchable and lists the address in addition to the number of dangerous dogs at each location. The map will be updated as animals are added to the registry.

To report a dangerous dog, call 311 (210-207-6000) or visit the ACS website. If a dangerous dog is posing an immediate threat, call 911.
