HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Christmas is over and all the new tech gadgets are out of their boxes and plugged in.
The common thing to do would be to put the empty boxes these expensive appliances came in on the curb for trash day, but Harris County Precinct 4 constables suggest you do things differently.
The department said thieves could be watching your trash and plotting an opportunity to steal your gifts.
"Criminals see those boxes after Christmas that had big screen TVs or computers, iPads, Play Stations and they make a mental note to possibly come back to that house at a later time," said Constable Mark Herman.
The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office shared these tips on how to properly discard your Christmas trash:
- Take your Christmas cardboard directly to the dump or recycling station, making sure that your address is not on any of the packaging.
- Break the boxes down -- not just to save space -- but also tear them into enough pieces that it's difficult to see what was in them originally.
- Place a locking mechanism on the lid of your trash barrel or recycling bin. That makes it tougher for someone to lift the lid and see what you received.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THIEVES AFTER THE HOLIDAYS.
