The city of Alvin is planning to buy the Thelma Ley Anderson YMCA building and transition it into a city owned and operated recreational facility.

The City Council on Thursday will consider an agreement to purchase the facility at 3201 South Highway 35 for $5.6 million, according to an agenda document.

The property on which it was built was donated to the city in 1989 by the Briscoe family, the document says.

In 2005, the city and YMCA entered into a ground lease agreement for the organization to construct and operate the facility.

The council in June authorized City Manager Junru Roland to negotiate a letter of intent to purchase it after YMCA officials said they wanted to sell the building.

Mayor Gabe Adame, city staff and YMCA representatives discussed plans for the facility with support from nearly 150 community members at an August town hall meeting, according to a news release.

The council approved a $6.15 million bond ordinance in August to be used for the purchase and renovation of the facility.

The YMCA of the Greater Houston board of directors recently approved the purchase and sales agreement that the City Council will vote on during its Jan. 4 meeting.

The city rec center’s projected opening would be in the summer of 2024, according to a presentation from October.
