SWEENY — A new director of the Public Works Department has finally been chosen.

During the Sweeny City Council meeting Tuesday, council members chose Terrence “Tex” Bell to fill the role.

This is a promotion for Bell, who was the public works crew leader. In that position, he oversaw streets, drainage and led waterline repair projects. Bell has extensive experience leading construction crews and previously worked for Zachry and Mammoet.

He will work under the supervision of City Manager Lindsay Koskiniemi, overseeing the physical facilities of the city, including water, sewer and parks. Directors have an important role in strategic planning for long-term programs and projects.

The council interviewed two outside candidates earlier this month. One candidate was offered the job of assistant director, but his counter salary request was too high so council withdrew the job offer.

On Aug. 30, the city parted ways with Clarence Wittwer, who held the position of Public Works director/assistant manager since June 5. The previous director, Ross Aguirre, was fired May 8, after being on the job for fewer than two years. Koskiniemi said she hopes to slow the revolving door.

“The benefit of promoting from within should also help to improve morale,” Koskiniemi said.

Koskiniemi said the City Council met in executive session to discuss the fate of the recently vacated building at 111 W. Third St., but the council took no action.
