SAN ANTONIO - Exciting news for a booming part of the area. Medina Valley Independent School District (MVISD) broke ground on Thursday on a brand new high school on the west side.

It will be located on Potranco and County Road 381.

MVISD has seen enormous enrollment growth in the last decade. Superintendent Dr. Scott Colass says a second high school is necessary to take help the capacity and logistical issues in their current facilities.

The school is scheduled to open in the fall of 2026.

But it is not just the school district that's growing - the far west side is booming and, despite some city leaders' objections, there is no end in sight.

"This is a big day for us and," Dr. Colass said. "Just a little of a lot to come you know what I'm saying"

This ground breaking on San Antonio's far West side will not be the last one MVISD has.

Their enrollment has grown every year for a decade and has jumped by nearly 1,000 students every year for the last three years.

"I think this is just a very attractive area on top of being a very high performing school district and that's what families are looking for these days," Dr. Colass said.

The school districts growth is just one example of the massive western movement cities like Castroville are seeing.

"Honestly, we don't love the growth," Castroville mayor Darrin Schroeder said. "We are a small country town that really enjoys being a small country town, but it is inevitable."

Schroeder said they project Castroville to double in size in the next five years and double again five years after that - which is already causing issues.

"Having 30-40,000 cars passing per day through a town of 3,000 people, it's tough," Schroeder said.

Despite the mayors displeasure, the move West is not stopping.

Medina County precinct two commissioner Larry Sittre said they have approved 15,000 lots north of Potranco.

"That would be equivalent to more houses than we have in the whole entire county," Sittre said.

"We are a tightknit community," Schroeder said with a smirk. "That's the thing, we welcome these people in, but we are going to put them to work."

As we all know, with expansion comes traffic.
