An Austin company is building 248 rental homes on San Antonio’s far West Side, adding to a segment of the housing market that has expanded as many struggle to afford buying houses amid rising interest rates and prices while others gravitate toward the flexibility of renting and eliminating the maintenance and repairs that come with owning a home.

Urban Moment Development’s single-family homes at 2084 Alamo Parkway west of SeaWorld San Antonio — in a gated community called YardHomes Juniper Pointe — will include one-, two- and three-bedroom units ranging from 635 square feet to 1,375 square feet, with rents starting at $1,550 a month.

“Urban Moment is excited to bring YardHomes to San Antonio,” Jim Campbell, founder and chairman of Urban Moment, said in a statement. “We’re redefining the apartment experience and introducing a new approach to residential housing. We’re making it possible for residents to enjoy the best of both worlds: the flexibility and convenience associated with apartment living, seamlessly blended with the privacy and spaciousness of a single-family home.”

Each home will have a private, fenced yard, as well as Ring doorbells, smart thermostats, fiber internet service and keyless entry. YardHomes Juniper Pointe also will have a dog wash station and park, grills, a fire pit, a fitness center and a pool. The development will be built in phases, with the first homes completed in December, said Colton Katzen, associate vice president at Urban Moment.

“We found this location very attractive due to the significant growth happening in this market with ample new developments including the Westover Hills Baptist Hospital, a $300 million hospital campus right down the street from our project,” Katzen said. “We believe this pocket has strong demographics, access to great employment and will continue to experience significant growth and new development in the years to come.”

Urban Moment was founded in Tucson, Ariz., as a land development and entitlement company, according to its website.

The company shifted to building custom homes in Tucson in 2010 and to developing multifamily projects in 2016. It moved operations to Austin and began building its first rental home project under the YardHomes brand in 2019. It is working on communities in Texas in Spring, Garland, Pflugerville, Hutto, Leander, Denton and Round Rock.

In recent years, local and national developers have built more single-family rental communities in the San Antonio area. For example, San Antonio-based Embrey launched a single-family rental platform with Collection at Gruene, a mix of duplex-style homes with 252 units near the Gruene historic district. The real estate investment company is working on similar communities in Boerne and Fort Worth.
