A city in the eastern portion of the state has proclaimed itself the Quinceañera capital of Texas.

Used interchangeably with quince, which means 15 in Spanish, Quinceañera is a milestone celebration in the Hispanic community when a girl turns 15, traditionally marking the transition from childhood to womanhood.

Driven to capitalize on the momentum of all the Quinceañera events taking place in the town, the city of Diboll announced its new nickname on Nov. 15.

minutes by car from Lufkin and just under two hours from Houston, the largest ethnic group in Diboll is made up of Hispanics and Latinos, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Diboll Civic Center has also seen a recent increase in Quinceañera events held at the location, with many bookings coming from people who live in surrounding areas, the owner of a local party rental store, JC’s Party Rentals, said.

Diboll city manager Jason Arnold said the Diboll Civic Center holds Quinceañera events all year round, so businesses in the town are equipped, knowledgeable and always ready to carry out a family's vision.

The city is also rebranding its annual Tamale Festival into a Quince Fest scheduled to be held on May 24. Before that, the Diboll Civic Center will host a Quince Expo on Jan. 14.
