San Antonio's plans to build new bike lanes in the heart of downtown just received a boost in funding from the state. TxDOT has approved San Antonio for nearly $16 million in state funding to build bike lanes on major streets in downtown like Market and Alamo streets, according to a Tuesday news release from public works.
The project will build a two-way, one-mile bike lane that will run from Flores Street to I-37. The new route will include Dolorosa, Market, Alamo and Commerce streets, according to the news release.
"At the City of San Antonio, we actively seek federal and state funding to allow us to take on new projects and further benefit residents," said Razi Hosseini, public works director, in the news release. "From City Hall to the Convention Center, this cycle track will provide a safer experience for all who travel down Market Street and Commerce Street."
The TxDOT funding will cover 100% of the estimated cost of preliminary engineering and construction that is set to begin in 2026. The city also plans on a separate bike lane on Dolorosa and Buena Vista streets that will run from Flores to Frio Street.
"The cycle tracks, upgraded traffic signals, and lighting will provide a safer, more comfortable ride and commute for our most vulnerable road users in the core of downtown."
