Two San Antonio police officers shot and killed a man while conducting a traffic stop Monday on the West Side, according to Police Chief William McManus.

He is the 13th person shot and killed by police this year, and this is the 22nd officer-involved shooting.

The shooting occurred as officers were attempting to stop a vehicle near Southwest 29th and West Commerce Street around 1 a.m.

As officers approached the vehicle, the two people inside fled, McManus said. They ran to a nearby parking lot.

“At some point during that encounter, the person (officers) were chasing pulled a handgun and two officers fired,” McManus said. “He was struck, and he is deceased in the parking lot.”

Police did not immediately release the name of the person killed, but McManus described him as a man in his late 20s or early 30s. Police also did not say what happened to the second occupant inside the vehicle.

McManus said both officers have completed about five years of service. They will be placed on administrative duty while the San Antonio Police Department investigates the incident.

SAPD had not yet viewed the body camera footage from the shooting, McManus said.
