Perryton Police Chief Announces Resignation
High Plains Observer Perryton
January 17, 2024
After a time of being on administrative leave, Perryton Police Chief Nick Yara has chosen to resign effective on February 5, 2024.
Perryton City Manager David Landis said, “It is my duty to continually monitor and evaluate all operational areas of the many services we provide. Following the deadly tornado of June 15, 2023, and the destruction of much of the City Of Perryton building infrastructure, and as I have stated previously, having to operate out of a variety of temporary structures, has fostered many challenges, both mentally and physically. Our recent administrative evaluation of the police department, supported by some external investigative consultant work, have helped determine that we need to head in a different direction. Therefore, Chief has determined that it is in his best interest of the organization to resign his duties and allow the city to begin the search for a new police department leader.”
While the City searches for a new chief, Lt. Ralph Gonzales will be interim police chief and former Perryton Police Chief Tony Hill will work very closely with the city and department in a consultant role.
